The company was founded in 1976 by Jim Thiel (1947 – 2009), a talented design engineer who began his career in early childhood by learning the piano. At the age of 12, he was already assembling and repairing radios. In 1978, Jim Thiel laid the foundations for building high-quality speaker systems with high phase-time accuracy of matching multiple speakers. This technology was patented as Coherent Source. Its constant improvement based on fundamental research conducted by Jim Thiel allowed the company to successfully produce 3-, 4- and even 5-way speaker systems, unmistakably matched in time and phase. Thiel Audio is a winner of more than 60 prestigious awards from audio magazines and exhibitions.
Design Features
Extremely accurate frequency response: /29 Hz – 20 kHz +-0.5 db•
Coherent design: full phase and time coherence•
Point source radiation pattern•
High-quality, innovative driver design.
The CS3.6 crossover includes 25 elements implemented with 38 components. To ensure very low distortion levels, high-quality components are used: polypropylene capacitors with special polystyrene and foil elements. All inductors have an air core, wound with low oxygen wire.
Speakers:
– 10-inch woofer with very long excursion with an advanced magnetic system and an aluminum diaphragm, operating at a frequency of up to 500 Hz.
– 4.5” dual-layer air-core diaphragm woofer with long gap/short voice coil operates from 500 to 3000 Hz.
– 1” high-performance metal dome tweeter operates above 3 kHz.
– 10” passive bass driver (passive radiator)

All drivers in the CS3.6 were designed by Jim Thiel and built to his specifications by Vifa in Denmark. The metal dome tweeter has a high resonant frequency (27 kHz). This speaker transitions at 3 kHz to a 4.5-inch midrange driver, which has a unique patented design. The midrange uses an innovative mechanical structure, incorporating a short voice coil in a long magnetic gap. The CS3.6 woofer is unusual in that it uses a metal diaphragm. The anodized aluminum diaphragm has a higher compressive strength, resulting in more energy being converted into sound during the transient process rather than compressing the diaphragm material. The metal diaphragm also increases the driver's resonant frequency (up to 2 kHz). The woofer design is designed to overcome nonlinearity. A passive bass radiator mounted directly above the woofer transfers low-frequency energy inside the cabinet to the outside, similar to how a port in a reflex system does.
Thiel CS 3.6 speakers are in good condition. Audiophile-sounding speakers. Some minor cosmetic damage—easy to repair.
