Power amplifier of the English company Musical Fidelity. "CR" in the model means "adjustable choke". The amplifier has one choke for each channel. The choke not only smooths out the pulsations of the supply voltage, but is also able to instantly release the energy stored in the filter capacitors. The use of chokes is a rarity in solid-state design. The amplifier is equipped with separate toroidal transformers for each channel (Dual Mono) and 40,000 microfarads of filter capacity in the power supply. All elements are discrete. The output stage includes three pairs of bipolar devices per channel. The input and driver stages of the amplifier are class A and the output stage is class A / B. The input stage has its own power supply (separate transformer), while the output stage has large dual monotransformers and bifilar chokes to smooth out any supply ripple (filtering). There is a system to protect acoustics in the event of abnormal situations.
The amplifier has two pairs of inputs and two pairs of acoustic terminals. It perfectly controls "heavy" acoustics, the dynamics are fast, with natural contrasts from barely audible passages to peak volume levels.
The dynamic range is very wide with high detail reproduction. This is especially felt on concert recordings – you can hear the muffled noise of the hall, the outlined parts of all instruments, and the orchestral tuttis, which are stunning in their energy. The tonal balance is even. The bass is also impressive.
The high class of the A 308 CR is also evidenced by the way the space is constructed - it has both scale and volume, as well as a clear fixation of sound images. There is almost no connection to the acoustics, the picture exists as if by itself, and each instrument is clearly in its place. This means that both channels have absolutely identical phase (speed) characteristics. From an engineering point of view, this is expensive. The amplifier holds the acoustics and especially the bass band so competently that the bass goes lower without losing either structure or energy. A massive foundation appears in the soundscape, which strengthens the sense of reality of what is happening. At the same time, the bass is not fattening, on the contrary, going down a little deeper, it seems slightly weakened, but it has a more noticeable effect on the subconscious. And what is valuable, the device with a colossal dynamic potential does not lose nuances on quiet fragments. And in the upper range (which can be considered a trademark of Musical Fidelity) there is neither harshness nor dryness. Microcontrasts are accurately rendered, without blurring
