The name of the company Leema Acoustics comes from the names of its founders Lee Taylor and Mallory Nichols. They met on the BBC. They had to work together on dubbing films, accompany studio broadcasts, and do mixing. Lee has also collaborated with other companies as a sound engineer for live concerts and performances in theaters: for example, jazz festivals in Camden and Brecon, performances by Electric Light Orchestra, Boomtown Rats, London productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, Tommy by The Who and many others. Mallory Nicholls left the BBC much earlier than Lee - he was offered to organize an independent recording studio for the famous film producer Tony Palmer, and then he became a co-owner of a large company that carried out the post-production of many films, including, for example, the cartoon "Wallace and Gromit"; after a while, Lee Taylor also started working there.
Leema Acoustics manufactures electronic components exclusively in England.
According to What hi-Fi Sound & Vision magazine, the Tucana is the best British integrated amplifier in the category under £5,000. It repeats the design of the popular Leema Atair monoblock and is built according to the double mono scheme. It has three transformers that separately feed each of the channels and control elements of the amplifier.
Output power of 148 watts per channel is quite good for this class, but in practice the Leema sounds much stronger. Fans of listening to music louder will not find many amplifiers of a similar class that can work in this mode, while remaining so unmoved. Most of the competition starts to sound bright, harsh or sharp at high levels, but the Tucana completely maintains its grace and control. However, he is not shy about showing off his strength - he just does it in other ways. Its bass is powerful and fierce, lacking neither weight nor conviction. The mentioned advantages would be enough to recognize this amplifier as excellent; but Leema also enhances them with a rare (even for this class) rhythmicity. It's not just the way he works out the beats - his sound is distinguished by the impressive coherence of individual instrumental parts. The result is an amplifier that can play almost anything equally well. He does not put himself in the foreground like many others - on the contrary, he gives in to the music, allowing it to speak for itself. And despite the outstanding detail, Tucana cannot be called overly analytical: it is very pleasant to listen to.
