Lumin should be familiar to audiophiles and music lovers. Despite the fact that the company started its business not so long ago (the first product was released in 2012), it quickly gained world recognition. Lumin's beginnings were controversial, as the first streamer was very similar to another product in the category made by Linn. However, it soon became clear that despite some external similarities, Lumin is a completely different device in terms of sound and capabilities. From the very beginning, the Lumin streamer has been able to play DSD files and music from a USB stick connected directly to it. The body is made of aluminum, and the front part is a thick plate of the same metal. The only element of decoration of the front panel is located in the center - a blue matrix display and a small logo. The rear panel of the D1 is definitely more interesting. It has RCA unbalanced analog outputs with very strong, gold-plated connectors, XLR balanced outputs, SPDIF digital output in BNC form. For those who want to use the digital output, an RCA adapter is provided. The use of BNC connectors shows a serious approach on the part of the design team, because a standard BNC connector allows the device to maintain the proper impedance on and, as a result, on the entire SPDIF track, which is practically impossible in the case of RCA. In addition to the connectors previously mentioned, there is an RJ-45 Ethernet connector and two USB Type A connectors for a flash drive or USB drive and a power outlet with a switch. The kit includes a typical laptop power supply, which – in the case of an audio device – is not an optimal solution. But using only one power supply (12V), it can be replaced with a product from a company specializing in power supplies, such as Teddy Pardo.
The device processes lossless FLAC, ALAC, AIFF and WAV files, as well as DSD (DSD and DIFF). The D1 works with PCM up to 32 bit/384 kHz and 2.8 MHz DSD (DSD64). If you want to upsample, every PCM file up to 96kHz can be converted to DSD.
Directly behind the digital outputs is a Wolfson WM8805 as an S/PDIF transceiver. Realtek RTL8201CP supports RJ45. There is also an FPGA under the large aluminum heatsink. Anther FPGA, Cyclone VI from Altera. Both of these logic chips process the signal before it reaches the D/A converters. One notable feature is obviously upsampling. DAC WM8741 Wolfson is used. Thanks to this, the D1 supports DSD64 and can also handle 32/384 PCM. D1, immediately after the converters, has Texas Instruments L49860 operational amplifiers, two per channel as low-pass filters. WIMA FKP2 and Nichicon Muse series capacitors. All analog is balanced, and the manual recommends XLR as the preferred connection type.
All functionality is controlled via the Lumin iPad app. Lumin is not only a streamer - after connecting a USB drive, it can share and use resources, so it becomes both a NAS and a streamer. Two in one.
The D1 sounds very similar to an analog source.
